Sundays Look Different at HFL

God has a compelling and challenging vision for His Church.

He wants us to live as a family. He’s inviting us to join His work to serve, save and transform. He’s committed to His promise to heal and change us too. He won’t stop until our convictions, character, habits and responses look like those of Jesus.

From 2020-2022, HFL began experimenting with different forms of Sunday gatherings to help us pursue this vision of being a worshipping community that is engaged in His mission and becoming like Him.

We now gather for Big Church on the 1/3/5 Sundays of the month while meeting in alternate gatherings called MMCs and Living Room Church.

We believe our church is healthiest when the whole body is engaged in using their gifts and capacity to love God and others.

Missional Micro-Church

Missional Micro Churches (MMCs)

MMCs exist to multiply serious disciples of Christ, and therefore to eventually launch new MMCs.

What it looks like:

  • Bi-weekly house church gatherings and shared meals where we interact more personally and deeply than is typical in a big church service

  • Accountability to a shared Rule of Life (basic Christian rhythms & reporting) as we seek to live our shared faith

  • Intentional focus on entering God’s mission with Him to love those around us

  • Each group adopts slightly different connection and missional rhythms outside of the Sunday gatherings

Is it a fit for me?

  • We encourage anyone interested to come check out an MMC for several months before committing to join it and adopt all of the commitments. If you’re looking for a deeper connection with others, a challenge to more intentionally join God’s mission, and a group to share more of life with than a normal Sunday service, this could be for you!

A Missional Micro Church (MMC) is a spiritual family pursuing life with God and joining in His mission together.

Big Church

Big Church is a classic church service where all of HFL gathers together for worship, teaching, and connection. This happens on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of the month.

Living Room Church

Living Room Church (LRC) is a midsize church gathering aimed at formation, engagement, community building, and simplicity. These meet on the 2nd, and 4th Sundays of the month.

LIVING ROOM CHURCH(LRC)

LRC aims to rebalance the elements of a fairly standard church service for the sake of deeper formation and connection. If you’re looking to meet some people while learning the Christian faith and discussing real life and faith, this is for you.

What it looks like:

  • LRC typically begins with musical worship, followed by communion, a shorter sermon, and then discussion and prayer in smaller groups. There is a kids ministry time for those ages 3 - 12 during the teaching and discussion time. Parents with younger kids have access to the nursery.

  • We sometimes offer multiple teaching streams so participants can choose a topic most relevant to them.

  • LRC intentionally orients us around the Lord’s supper and shortens the teaching time to make space for discussion. People are welcome to sit quietly and listen. We include discussion because we think many people learn more when they talk about a shorter message than they do listening to a longer one. We also think that many of us need to practice talking about deeper things and spiritual things. These short, small group discussions often help us know one another better and live out the church’s God given calling to be a family.

Is it a fit for me?

  • Drop into Living Room Church anytime and check it out.

Whether you’re a long time member of HFL or reading this for the first time, you’re welcome to join us for any of these forms of church.

Rule of Life

HFL puts a lot of emphasis and energy into our Rule of Life program.

We believe Jesus offers us the best life there is. It’s not an easy life or painfree life, but it is the good life. This good life with God requires us to change. We have to learn to walk with Him each day, work with Him, and become like Him.

The mission of these groups is to “to go as far as we can with as many as we can into a life of being loved by God, loving God, and loving others.”

We do that by helping people develop meaningful spiritual community and spiritual friendships where they learn to intentionally adopt the habits, thoughts, and lifestyle of Jesus.
